HMC Weekly: Cadenza FM

Hey Handmade folks,

I hope you enjoyed the Satelital game demo from our Tokyo meetup host. (Try it if you missed out!) I’m also happy to announce another indie project from a community member: Cadenza FM

We’re big on user’s ownership at Handmade Cities, and Cadenza aligns perfectly. Jason was gracious enough to give me an early invite, and I’ve been daily driving it for weeks now. I have a fairly extensive library of CDs, and while I usually enjoy them on my modded iPod, I don’t mind another backup in the cloud, plus the flexibility of accessing it through Cadenza’s sleek UI, or any subsonic compatible client; Jason nailed the setup flow, onboarding to Arpeggi (my preferred iOS client) took no more than a couple minutes (counting downloading the app).

Please give it a try, show Jason some love, and report any bugs you find!

Alright, now for some housekeeping, it’s been a minute…

Yet another VPS

We now have three Ubuntu VPSes running virtually all of HMC. With our recent onslaught of applications to join Handmade Revolt, I’m glad to have more resources to provide some isolation, and prevent another outage. While Abner’s busy reviewing all the new submissions I have a few things on my plate as well:

• I gave community member Devon contributor permissions to customize Revolt to suit our needs better (it is a fork, after all.) I look forward to reviewing and merging his PRs.

• Upgraded to the latest Gitea and I hope to get time to work on spam prevention soon. Gitea (and now its CI runner) are on independent VPSes because they’re prone to crawling and other more malicious attacks. We can’t ignore it for much longer.

• Reviewing Abner’s old server code to ensure no more secret credentials are accidentally baked in. After that, we’re porting anything that’s still in Python over to Go, containerizing it, and onboarding it to our common deployment infra.

As always, please email me at jmug@handmadecities.com if you want to help us out. I’m hoping our next HMC Weekly won’t take weeks!
