Dear Seattle folks,

The last Saturday is upon us which means our monthly meetup takes center stage! Please RSVP at the earliest opportunity.

The details:

We’re right next to Roosevelt’s Light Rail. We can’t miss it if we have Apple/Google maps:

• Where: One Bite Cafe (in Seattle)
• When: Saturday, July 25th, 2-4PM
• Parking: There is street parking around the block. However, the most reliable place to park is “Green Lake Park & Ride”

The entire shop is reserved for Handmade, so let’s order snacks and drinks to support this family business!

Saturday’s Presentations (2-4PM)

We start with community news from yours truly, followed by two featured presentations. Time permitting, we wrap it all up with roundtable discussions.

Presentation #1: Web Origami

I met Jan Miksovsky through Lobsters (the real story is far more interesting!) He’s the author of Web Origami, a kind of re-imagining of how to build websites. Emphasis mine:

“Origami is designed for you: someone who wants to make a site for yourself or a small organization, who can write some HTML and CSS, who wants to understand how their site is put together. Maybe you’re not a professional developer — or you are, but want to build sites more interesting sites more quickly.”

Yes yes yes that’s me. Jan attended a Kirkland co-working session and offered us an origami demo: he ethically scraped my own personal site and rapidly rebuilt it in his own manner. I understood IMMEDIATELY ori deserves a spotlight at the monthly meetup.

Presentation #2: Debunking Myths on Floating Point

Our good friend Jordan (AngelFish) was inspired by our last roundtable discussion on floating point. I can easily vouch he has the relevant expertise to teach us something new. In Jordan’s own words:

“I’d like to give a small talk about why floating point is good enough, going into how IEEE floats work, debunking some misconceptions about them, comparing them to commonly suggested alternatives, and showing a few neat tricks you can do with floats along the way.”

I’m really excited for this one.

Seattle After Dark (4-7PM) 🍕

Between 4:00 - 4:30PM we will wind down the official meetup and make our way to dinner and drinks. “After Dark” is optional, but during this time I moderate very little, which lets community members get spicier with their takes on our industry as a whole. It’s a hoot.
