Seattle folks,

The last Saturday is upon us in two weeks, which means our monthly meetup takes center stage! RSVP your seat at the earliest opportunity: if we run out of room I will be checking against the list.

The details:

We’re right next to Roosevelt’s Light Rail. We can’t miss it if we have Apple/Google maps:

  • Where: One Bite Cafe (in Seattle)
  • When: Saturday, August 29th, 2:00 - 4:15PM
  • Parking: There is street parking around the block. However, the most reliable place to park is “Green Lake Park & Ride”

The entire shop is reserved for Handmade, so let’s support this family business.

Bubble Tea Half-Hour (2:00 - 2:30)

Use this time to arrive at the cafe, order some food or drinks, and get to know some Handmade folks.

Saturday’s Presentations from 2:30 to 4:15

We begin with a fireside chat, followed by two fun talks from meetup members: there’s enough variety to keep everyone interested! It’s also pretty chill and not recorded, so we generally allow you to raise your hand and ask questions all throughout.

1. Fireside Chat with A.K. (2:30 - 3:00)

Andrew Kelley will critique the build.zig I wrote for Terminal Click. It’s an awesome opportunity to understand how Zig is getting used to ship a commercial (and cross-platform) project written in vanilla C.

2. Software Modular Synthesizers (3:00 - 3:30)

Blake was unable to present some months ago due to forces outside his control, so we’re excited to try again:

Blake North studied audio programming and sound design at DigiPen. He’s been an ongoing participant of Google’s Summer of Code.

I was shocked to realize half of you have never heard of software modular synthesizers and Blake is in my estimation a real expert compared to the rest of us. In this presentation he will introduce us to the wonderful world of creative play through digital audio: which software to use and how, what kind of hardware devices or peripherals are available and so on.

Coffee Break (3:30 - 3:45)

Enjoy a 15-minute coffee & restroom break.

3. Can We Self-Host Email? (3:45 - 4:15)

Vincent Lee is the first member I’ve met who unironically operates a mail server. It appears to work successfully (!) so I’ve kindly asked him to show the class how it’s done. At Handmade Cities we self-host as much as possible but email is a scary proposition… I’m hopeful to have my concerns mollified :)

Seattle After Dark (4:15 - 7:15) 🍕

Between 4:15 - 4:30PM we will wind down the official meetup and make our way to pizza and pub time. (All within walking distance.) “After Dark” is optional, but I will moderate very little, which lets community members get spicier with their takes on our industry as a whole. It’s a hoot!

BONUS: Zig Day on Sunday

Back-to-back weekend bonanza: Our friend Scott is running Zig Day the following day, so make sure you RSVP over there as well.

See you August 29th,
Abner Coimbre
