Seattle folks,

The last Saturday is upon us, which means our monthly meetup takes center stage. RSVP your seat at the earliest opportunity!

Note: Avoid the “Add to Calendar” button at this time, as there’s an off-by-one bug.

The details:

We’re right next to Roosevelt’s Light Rail. We can’t miss it if we have Apple/Google maps:

  • Where: One Bite Cafe (in Seattle)
  • When: Saturday, January 31st, 2-4PM
  • Parking: There is street parking around the block. However, the most reliable place to park is “Green Lake Park & Ride”

The entire shop is reserved for Handmade, so let’s order snacks and drinks to support this family business!

Saturday’s Presentations (2-4PM)

New year, new format!

We start with “opening notes” from yours truly, followed by featured presentations. Time permitting, we wrap it all up with roundtable discussions.

Opening Notes

Lessons from Dune and Linux Drivers

In every opening note I will offer local community news. Shortly after, I’ll briefly mention what’s gripping my attention as your community organizer.

While reading the Dune books and taking a stab at writing my first Linux driver, I learned two huge lessons which shattered my confidence in Terminal Click.

To be less dramatic about it: Dune and Linus accidentally ripped apart my strategy of how to work on Handmade projects, so I find myself reassembling the broken pieces.

Featured Presentation #1

Riley Labrecque is an engineering lead for the upcoming Star Wars game.

In this presentation we give Riley free reign to share his genuine love for gamedev: with any technical subject he’s been playing with or tackling as of late. (It need not be about his day job.) Don’t miss an opportunity to meet a chill and interesting figure from our industry.

Pssst, he’s likely attending our Friday co-working session. Meet Riley ahead of time and in an informal atmosphere.

Featured Presentation #2

The regulars know our good friend Jagi, a former Microsoft engineer. He’s a competent musician who enjoys working on hardware. Indeed I’ve been impressed with his dedication to the craft while being independent.

The above is a teaser to give a taste of what’s coming: there’s animation and audio involved as well. Naturally there will also be low-level code to accompany this curious hardware demo :)

Roundtable Discussion

To wrap up the meetup, the roundtable discussion is your chance to pitch a topic to the group in real-time. What’s on your mind? Which news about programming eat away at you, making you crave the opinion from fellow Handmade devs?

I will moderate these discussions to ensure they’re insightful and everyone has opportunity to speak.

There’s open slots from March 2026 onward (we’ve secured presentations for February already.) If there’s interest contact us directly with your submission.

Presentations may last between 15-30 minutes, and note that our audience is allowed to respectfully interrupt with questions! It may be about any software project you’re working on, and it can even be commercial, so long as we dive into interesting technical details. Otherwise, your presentation could be about a programming topic you’ve researched which gave you some new insight.

Seattle After Dark (4-7PM)

As always, between 4:00 - 4:30PM we will wind down the official meetup and make our way to dinner and drinks. “After Dark” is optional, but during this time I moderate very little, which lets community members get spicier with their takes on our industry as a whole. It’s a hoot.

See you Saturday at 2PM,
Abner Coimbre

Hey Handmade folks,

Thanks for joining us at Handmade Boston this month! We finally hit the right formula for the masterclasses this year, and it really resonated with everyone. The speakers brought their A-game, and I’m incredibly grateful to them for making it all come together.
